Singapore, March 14,l 2010 - A former staff of a local cake-making company sent a video to STOMP to reveal its unhygienic practices.

He said the China staff failed to use plastic gloves or wash hands when creaming the cakes.

In an email to STOMP, he wrote: “Please understand that I was an employee in the baking processes at Emicake’s Eunos Technolink plant.”

“I was shocked to see staff from China failing to use plastic gloves or washing their hands clean and they were wearing half mask which they could easily sneeze from before wiping cream sugar on the cakes.

“The cake making tools were not at an appropriate cleanliness level and they were not washed before being reused.

“I realise that customers enjoy eating some of the cakes, but they should be aware of how the staff handle the cakes.

“I resigned but  the supervisor and boss warned me not tell anybody about workplace and that there were unhygienic hands touching the cakes.

“I hope the health officers take up a tough stand against EMICAKE as the staff failed to use plastic gloves and their half masked faces make it easy to sneeze and spit.”

We must thank the ex-staff member from Emicakes for alerting us. I shall not buy any more cakes from Emicakes henceforth. The National Environment Agency should investigate into this and interview the staff.

4. I only patronise food places with at least a "B" grading given that I am a fussypot for food for my family. I am pretty sure Emicakes has at least a "B" grading by AVA as I do buy cakes from them on occasions

Regardless, we certainly hope that news in STOMP are created to bring awareness of happenings around us and not a means of false allegations (if any) for personal gains. My immediate feel after reading this article is that it is delibrately targeting at Emicakes. That's just my 2cents worth thoughts.

After viewing the pretty blurred video, I would like to share my thoughts:

1. Was this ex staff a senior management level to have travelled to China to witness the link of accusations? My business dealing in China tells me that China is especially stringent with regards to QS standards (since they are now trying to attract foreign investors) hence this article sure surprises me.

2. Standing in the perspective of a businessman, it is indeed strange to have spend money on hygiene caps and mask and yet deprive the employees from gloves????

3. The plates / trays (sorry I'm not sure if there is a professional term to name) all seems cleanly and properly stacked

4. I only patronise food places with at least a "B" grading given that I am a fussypot for food for my .....
