TOFU & NOODLES
Who: Mr Chiew Berng Kim (above), 60
What: Tofu and noodles stall (no name)
Where: Tiong Bahru Market, 01-52, open: 4am to about noon daily
This stall is known for its fresh tofu and fried tofu, bean sprouts or tau geh, chin chow, and noodles in all shapes and textures – yellow Hokkien noodles, flat rice noodles or kway teow, and thick rice noodles or chor bee hoon.
Mr Chiew has been selling these items in Tiong Bahru Market for more than 40 years. He took over the stall from his parents.
He says: “Most of my customers have been coming here for many years, we are almost like family.”
Ms Judy Koh, 45, chef-owner of cooking school Creative Culinaire in Eng Hoon Street and Caffee Pralet, which is just next door to the school, gets all her tofu and tau geh from Mr Chiew.
She reckons good service is important.
“He is extremely nice and very friendly. I have been buying from him for about 10 years.”
