Expect crab and wine at Hong Kong Street Chun Kee
With so many Hong Kong Street restaurants in Singapore, it's no wonder the owner of Hong Kong Street Chun Kee grabbed the opportunity to make his outlet stand out a little, when it came along.
Make that more than a little. James Teo's three-month-old Tanjong Katong Road restaurant - previously an air-conditioned coffeeshop specialising in sliced fish hor fun and other zi char (homestyle) dishes at Telok Kurau - is dazzling white, both inside and out.
He says: 'We had to give up our former location because we were told by the landlord that we had to close for 6-8 months for the top floor of the building to be converted into a motel. This wasn't viable for us, so we moved here instead.
'At the same time, we decided to go a little upscale to provide our customers with a better ambience and more comfort. In this way, we hope to attract diners who don't live in the area, too - working executives who want to organise office luncheons and dinners, for instance.'
While the menu has been spiffed up with mock-leather covers and tassles to match the restaurant's cushy new chairs and sleek white tables, its content and prices remain the same.
The signature fish hor fun, for instance, is still $6.50 for a small portion and $11 for a large. And it's still good, too. The rice noodles were infused with wok hei (literally, 'wok's breath') and the slices of snakehead had no trace of the earthy flavour that usually mars the taste of freshwater fish.
For now, there is nothing much out of the ordinary on the five-page list, but Mr Teo says he is 'always looking to add new dishes to the menu'. He adds: 'We are also going to introduce crab dishes and hope to provide a wine service soon.'
