HIGH: $14 for 250g, Beurre Echire

I want to slap this on everything I eat. My colleagues would do the same too, judging from the blissful looks on their faces after a taste. The butter is produced by a dairy co-operative in the village of Echire in the west of France, using milk collected from a specific area.

How refined it tastes. There’s no jarring saltiness. It is rich but not in a cloying way. I think of sunny pastures every time I take a bite.

LOW: $2.95 for 250g,FairPrice Pure Creamery Butter
From: FairPrice supermarkets

With butter prices going up, baking cakes and cookies is getting a lot more expensive. This housebrand butter from Australia is one of the least expensive ones I’ve found. It is perfectly serviceable and creamy, but there’s a slight greasy taste at the end. The butter is also slightly saltier than some brands, so bakers would need to adjust the salt levels in their recipes.

Verdict: Bake with the housebrand butter, spread your toast with Echire. There’s room for different kinds of butter in your life, surely?
