Despite the economic downturn, retailers are fighting back - through food.

The inaugural Food Safari and Home Electronics Fair, to be held from tomorrow to Sunday at the Suntec Convention Centre, will see 100 food exhibitors presenting everything from Saudi Arabian prawns to speciality Spanish cured meats.

Twenty electronics companies will exhibit kitchen and home appliances.

The exhibition is organised by Singapore Press Holdings' lifestyle-events subsidiary, Sphere Exhibits.

"Visitors will be treated to not just a gastronomical experience, but also to an event where they can bargain-hunt for quality home electronics," said Sphere's executive director, Mr Chua Wee Phong, in a press statement.

"This is our maiden show and we wanted it to be different."

Visitors will be spoilt for choice with food workshops, which will cover everything from wine investment to Korean cooking and French pastry-making lessons. One workshop will even teach participants how to make chicken rice.

And visitors will also get to meet Straits Times food critics face-to-face.

Mr Wong Ah Yoke, Ms Tan Hsueh Yun, Ms Thng Lay Teen and Ms Teo Pau Lin will conduct cooking demonstrations on Sunday.

There is also a cooking competition - The Safari King Culinary Challenge.

Twelve semi-finalists, all under age 30, will be tasked with creating the most innovative new Singapore dish.

A winner will be crowned on Sunday. Judges include food consultant Violet Oon and the vice-president of Singapore Chefs Association, Mr Randy Chow.
