This sliced fish soup, made with the "leather jacket fish", is one of its kind in Singapore. Also try the absolutely delicious Ikan Bakar, which is so good that it will leave you wanting more.

It's the recession, and people are looking for more wallet-friendly places to grab their chow. It's all about getting the maximum bang for your buck.

I headed out to Jurong West to try what a newly opened fish soup stall offered. Tucked into a corner of the coffeehouse, this stall is the only stall in Singapore using the Leather Jacket Fish for their Sliced Fish Soup - most use Batang.

At $2.50, its a steal.

It's surprising that the fish has not been on the market previously, because it tastes absolutely delectable and smooth in the soup. The meat is springy and firm, and not flaky like frozen fish slices that other fish soup hawkers use.

It comes in a bowl filled with generous portions of fish, lettuce, dried seaweed and specially prepared egg bits made by the owner.

These floating bits of treasure melt in the mouth and goes exceedingly well with the soup - a definite hit with the customers.

The clear stock soup tasted really good, too. It would be ideal for the upcoming rainy and chilly monsoon months.

If you want to turn up the heat,  dip the fish slices in their yummy homemade sambal sauce, which packs just the right amount of spice for that "kick" without numbing your mouth.

The second must-have that this stall offers is the absolutely tasty ikan bakar - prices vary with size and market prices - or barbecued fish.

Covered with a tumeric sambal sauce, this mouth-watering dish is a crowd-pleaser. The tender and springy texture of the fish can be tasted in every bite.

Go early, because the dish sells out fast each day and the lady-boss insists that the Ikan Bakar cannot be taken away. If you want it, you have to eat it right there.

The other dishes offered by the stall are the fish soup (chunks, not slices of fish) and the fried fish platter (fish fingers served with mayonnaise on the side).

The no-frills dining style of this outlet means that you certainly do not need deep pockets to enjoy the fine fish dishes here.
