These Japanese liquers are fantastic on the rocks.

'Come, try, try,' the promoter at Isetan supermarket said, when I happened by.

Before I knew it, I had two little plastic cups in my hand, with different versions of a Japanese brand of liqueur in them.

I'm a sucker for anything flavoured with the Japanese citrus called yuzu, so I drank that one first. Ooh. The distinctive fragrance of the citrus came through nicely, and the booze provided a much-needed buzz.

But do you know what is better than yuzu liqueur? Yuzu liqueur with ume or plum. The second version really knocked my socks off because there was the one-two punch from the two kinds of fruit.

Both are fantastic on the rocks and you can also make a refreshing drink by adding soda water. Or think outside the box: Use the liqueurs to flavour a fruit salad, for example, or add to your favourite citrus sorbet recipe.

Kaniyuku liqueurs, $24 for a 500ml bottle, from Isetan supermarket, Shaw House, tel: 6733-1111. Opening hours: 10am to 9.30pm daily
