Skinny pizza impresses hugely
Skinny Pizza has opened a second outlet at Wheelock Place and it seems to have revved up its hip quotient.

Singapore, June 1, 2010- IT TOOK me a while to step into Skinny Pizza.

I am not a fan of pizzas and I am often wary of spending money at eateries with super hip decor.

But since my first visit about a year ago, I’ve been hooked.

The pizzas are more like salads on a crust and I was seduced by the truffle fries.

Skinny Pizza has opened a second outlet at Wheelock Place and it seems to have revved up its hip quotient.

The decor will not be out of place in New York or London and the menu is interesting.

I popped in to taste the new offerings and I was mostly impressed.

Most impressive was the Risotto ($23) pizza.

It has roma tomato, bacon and black olive risotto, garnished with fava beans, shredded parmesan and almond flakes.

It’s carb on carb and it’s delicious.

It looks heavy but it’s not.

It is, instead, infused with flavours and texture.

I also liked the salt cod brandade ($25).

It’s a traditional French puree of salt cod, potato, garlic and herbs, and topped with wild rocket, shaved parmesan cheese, crunchy radish and extra virgin olive oil.

Another interesting pizza is the grilled figs with parmesan crumble ($25).

This is a like a dessert pizza with a sweet and refreshing topping.

But not everything worked.

The freeform chilli con carne ($21) is a deconstructed pizza with a Mexican chili with prime minced beef, kidney beans and juicy tomatoes.

The chilli lacks fire and personality.

It was so deconstructed that it might as well had been a dip.

The ginger butter chicken ($21) – chicken pieces with Indian spices – didn’t impress either. The chicken chunks were cut too big and lacked flavour.

If you are the type that lives for dessert, you’re in luck.

There are lots to choose from. The two I liked most has a surprise in the middle.

The banana salted caramel cake ($7) has sweet banana chunks on the outside.

Dig in and a heart of salty caramel greets you.

The mint passionfruit kachang ($10) is a modern take on the ice kachang.

The coconut foam exterior is sweet but in the centre is a lemon curd.

I love the twists in these two desserts.

But go for the pandan jelly sponge ($6) if you like really sweet dessert.

While I like the food, service is important.

It is that extra touch that seals the deal.

At Skinny Pizza Wheelock, the service is excellent.

The outlet manager, PJ, leads a crew of about seven and their smiles are contagious.

I’ve never seen a more energetic group of servers, all happy to recommend a dish or to stop for a chat.

It makes for a very intimate and relaxed dining experience.

I walked out of Skinny Pizza feeling really fat.

But, really who cares?

I had such a delicious time.
