Where to eat near the Big Walk
Check out these tasty treats after finishing your 5km walk this Sunday.

Singapore, July 16, 2010 - SO YOU have completed The New Paper Big Walk@Marina Bay 2010 and got a good workout.

When you arrive at the spanking new Marina Bay waterfront promenade at the end of your walk, you can tuck into goodies at the carnival organised by the Urban Redevelopment Authority.

But if you’re in the mood to discover the culinary charms of the Central Business District, you can find food to fit all budgets within walking distance.

Here are some suggestions.

THE SAIL AT MARINA BAY
If you’re pooped after your walk and are into Japanese food, there is Cafe Hokkaido Sandwich and Sashimi Deli (#01-33), which is known for its king crab items.

The king crab sandwich is affordable at $10. There is also the king crab chirashi (or sashimi over a bowl of rice) at $16.50, which comes with a bowl of miso soup.

Cafe Hokkaido is open from 10.30am on Sundays.

SHENTON HOUSE
If you want halal food, you’ll find it at Zouq (#01-01) at Shenton House. It’s open from 8am on Sundays.

Zouq has been in Shenton Way for about a year but the people running it has been in the business for a few decades.

Its last location was at Capitol Building as Makanan Bollywood.

The food has a combination of North and South Indian and Malay influences, Its daily bestseller is the dum briyani. The nasi goreng and mee goreng ($3.50 each) are also popular.

Worth a try, too, are the teh tarik (80 cents) and teh halia ($1), which are made according to 40-year-old recipes.

LAU PA SAT
A short distance away from the finishing line, this famous food haunt has stalls offering a variety of local hawker fare.

But if you must have fast food, there is always Wendy’s, which opens from 7am.

Try the Wholesome Breakfast with Smoked Turkey (Combo at $6.60 and a la carte $4.70). This meal is substantial enough to keep you happy until dinner.

MAXWELL MARKET
Feeling spritely and willing to travel for food? Then walk to Maxwell Market for Madam Tan’s nasi lemak.

The rice (70 cents a serving) has attained cult status with people in the know and these fans have been equally rapturous about the beef rendang ($2.50). The chicken curry is another winner ($2.50).

AMARA SINGAPORE
Can you go the distance? It’s a fair walk but after a brisk 5km, why not go that extra mile? Your reward is breakfast at Cafe Oriental at Amara Singapore.

I recommend the bak kut teh ($14.90) or the huge Local Breakfast Set ($8.80).

Cafe Oriental is open 24 hours daily.

The Big Walk@Marina Bay 2010 takes place this Sunday. It’s co-organised by the URA. And sponsors are NTUC FairPrice, the Singapore Flyer, Anlene, POSBank, Nikon Singapore and Garmin-Asus Singapore.
