A new type of chilled beancurd is creating waves at the Old Airport Road Food Centre.

Queues form at the Lao Ban Soya Beancurd stall even before it opens for business.

The stall has been around for only 1 ½ years.

When The New Paper was there on a Sunday afternoon, there were about 30 people queuing outside the stall, waiting patiently for it to open at 1pm.

In just 45 minutes, all 500 bowls of beancurd, which filled the two chillers in front of the stall, were sold out.

Miss Mischa Tan, 23, was one happy customer after queueing for 40 minutes for 20 bowls of the dessert from Lao Ban Soya Beancurd.

Miss Tan said she and her family were hooked on the dessert after they first tried it last year.

Though she lives in Serangoon, she drove to Old Airport Road to satisfy her beancurd cravings twice a week.

So what’s so special about the beancurd here at the Old Airport Road Food Centre?

Well, according to the owner of the Lao Ban Soya Beancurd stall, 61-year-old Mr Li Pui Shing, the version he sells is unlike the traditional type which is scooped out, slab by slab, from a pot.

The version made by Mr Li,who is from Hong Kong, is chilled, and has a very smooth and creamy texture.

Seeing how lucrative Lao Ban Soya Beancurd’s business has been, other hawkers have jumped onto the bandwagon.

There are currently seven stalls selling chilled beancurd at food centre.
