Among my family's favourite eateries is a long-established porridge place, which I've become increasingly disappointed with because of the deteriorating standards of their food.

Thankfully, I've discovered a great Taiwanese porridge joint at Jalan Besar that we can now go to instead.

This new eatery, Feng Shun Lou Taiwan Porridge, is situated in a two-storey shophouse, next to a coffee shop operated by the same proprietor.

According to Chef Pang, who helms the kitchen, the spread of over 90 items on their menu is authentic Taiwanese porridge fare.

The Century Egg with Beancurd ($4.50), a cold dish, really whetted my appetite. I love century eggs but not their odour, a result of the curing process they've undergone.

However, I found the translucent golden and jelly-like cubes of the white and the tofu cubes in this dish refreshingly clean-tasting.

After savouring a few more dishes, I realised how "light-handed" the chefs were.

All the gravies and sauces, including those for the Stewed Pork ($7), Mui Choy with Pork ($8) and Deep-fried Pomfret with Soya Bean Sauce ($10/$15) were perfectly seasoned, making every mouthful appetising.

Chef Pang told me that the sauce for the Stewed Pork was lighter in colour and taste than usual because they use a Japanese brand of soya sauce and Japanese wine to make it.

The Oyster Omelette ($7) and pomfret were fried to perfection as well. The omelette was light and fluffy, as it should be.

The delicious pomfret was well complemented by the fragrant black bean sauce, garnished with leeks and sesame oil.

I experienced a slight upset tummy just before meeting my colleague for lunch at this place; but magically, all symptoms of discomfort disappeared once I began digging into our hearty meal.

Porridge is indeed "comfort food"!
