Favourite dish of the night: Prawn aglio olio
There's a prawn in every mouthful of prawn aglio olio at Sunset Tavern restaurant and bar.

IT'S not often that a diner chances upon a head chef who is only 24 years old.

This week's panel was pleasantly surprised when Xavier Xiao introduced himself as the head chef of Sunset Tavern restaurant and bar.

His appetiser - sauteed mushrooms in butter white wine sauce - was a great way to start the meal. If there were any doubts about this young man's ability to whip up dishes befitting a head chef, they were quickly dispelled as the panel dug into his food.

One other person who probably related to Xiao was one of our readers, 14-year-old student Fu Rongen.

An aspiring journalist with a passion for food, Rongen wrote to The New Paper asking to join us.

The wooden decks of Sunset Tavern made it conducive for good conversation, which is always a perk that makes a meal a more memorable experience.

The restaurant bar has electronic dart game stations, a pool table and TV screens tuned to sports. It's just the right place for families and friends to spend quality time together.

As the young and passionate chef worked away in the kitchen, the youngest reader to have ever been on Table For 4 sipped on her mocktail.

With children playing in the background, we tucked into our food.

What we liked

Mr Hwang was happy with Xiao's recommendation of mushrooms in white wine sauce as a starter. The garlic bread accompanied the fragrant cream sauce well and was admitted into my list of comfort food.

All of us voted the prawn aglio olio as the favourite of the night.

The pasta was cooked al dente and served with a generous pile of prawns.

In terms of price value, it was Rongen - on a constant student budget - who pointed out that the 'prawns itself were almost as much as the pasta'.

What we didn't like

The fish and chips was voted the least favourite dish. Mr Tan and Rong En detected a 'fishy' smell.
