Singapore, June 15, 2009 - There is chicken rice and there is chicken rice. You can find one practically in every coffeeshop or hawker centre.

My personal favourite todate is Sin Kee Chicken Rice at Commonwealth Avenue Food Centre (or more popular known as Margaret Drive Food Centre due to the road it is at). I believe they are among the better chicken rice stalls in Singapore.

A good plate of chicken rice should be judged by its rice, chicken and sauces. To me, Sin Kee passed with flying colours in all these 3 areas.

The rice is fragrant and flavourful; is of the right consistency too - not hard or chewy. Their chunky chicken pieces are tender, fleshy and not dry even though breast meat is used. I also like all their condiments.

The chilli sauce is not too overpowering, has enough zing and it goes well with the chicken, so does the thick dark soya sauce.

Unfortunately this time round when I ordered a plate of $3 chicken rice, minced ginger was not served to me unlike the other times when I “da bao” (usually 3 packs for the family) - the lady always obliges when I request for it. (She was not there today by the way).

Besides the many accolades displayed at the stall I noticed they even had a picture of them with our President and Mrs Nathan.

I also like the nostalgic feel of the area – I used to live in Queenstown and it is one of the few places that hasn’t changed too much.
