Four shops selling soya beancurd or tau huay have opened at Clementi Central within walking distance of each other.
Previously there were only two stalls 51 Rochor Tau Huay and Sweetheart Beancurd, but popular Lao Ban Soya Beancurd and MOF's new beancurd stall AmaSoy set up shop the same week.
A netizen who goes by the username Samdy wrote into citizen journalism website, Stomp, and said that the two new stores have been "battling furiously, with equally long queues."
Sweetheart Beancurd was the first stall to open in the area about seven months ago. A staff member told Shin Min Daily News that business hasn't been affected as regular customers still patronise their shop.
51 Rochor Tau Huay's business partner Mr Luo Qi Guang told the Chinese daily that they had opened for business about three weeks ago. Little did they expect that two weeks later, two more beancurd stalls would open in the same area. "But I have confidence in our tau huay, and we wouldn't start a price war to attract customers," Mr Luo said.
